Kangar, Dec 8 – Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) topped the Sports Carnival of Malaysian Technical University Network (MTUN) as overall champion for the sixth time after winning its fourth gold and three silver medals through seven events, which ended yesterday.

Besides UniMAP, other institutions that constitute MTUN are the Technical University of Malaysia Malacca (UTeM), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP). UMP was forced to pull out at the last minute due to flooding in Kuantan.

UniMAP manifested significantly superior in athletic events when clinched two gold medals in the 8km relay race in the men’s mix (staff and students) and women mix (staff and students) categories.

The silver medals for both events belong UTHM while UTeM had to settle for bronze.

UTHM, however, make amends in the athletic events with a single gold medal at the event of sepak takraw (shift), while leaving UniMAP with a disappointing silver medal and a bronze medal for UTeM. In spite of this, at the event of sepak takraw (team challenged), UniMAP has successfully disappointing other opponents, UTHM and UteM by earning gold medal.

UniMAP continued to earn gold medal after defeated UTeM who earned silver and UTHM as a third, in the team mountain bike event. Meanwhile, in the event of netball (staff and students), UTeM has successfully defeated UniMAP and UTHM for the gold.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) of UniMAP, Dato’ Prof. Ir. Dr. Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal said, the MTUN Sport Carnival is part of the activities that is designed to strengthen the relations between the four technical universities in Malaysia.

"As a group of new universities, MTUN must be more aggressive in planning strategies and missions in an effort to compete among the higher education sectors, especially with the old universities and also the group of research universities”.

"In addition to cooperation in the field of academic research which is done periodically, participation in a sport event such as this is also one of the best mediums to strengthen the relationship between the four universities," he said at the closing and prize giving ceremony here last night.
At the ceremony, Zul Azhar handed the championship flag to UTHM, whom will be the host for the seventh carnival next year.
